Club Tournaments
We are excited to announce that WKC will host 3 in-house club tournaments this season for the junior, youth, teen and adult classes. Think of these as “learning tournaments” to prepare for real tournaments. They are designed to be supportive, educational, and fun! Every student should attend when possible. Here’s what you can expect at each event:
A quick 5-10 minute presentation for parents and families to learn sport tournament rules (that way you can know what’s going on!)
A very encouraging environment for students! All students will be allowed unlimited attempts at their kata (and even a senior student helper to join them if needed) and all students will get a minimum of two sparring matches.
Prizes for all kids who enter/attend!
Tips for Success:
To avoid stress or disappointment, arrive early! It can be overwhelming for students to arrive just on time for their event. Allow a few moments to relax, grab a sip of water and get settled. We aim to start all events on time so please note that late comers may not be admitted as the event will have already begun.
Bring a water bottle! We all get thirsty out there!
Avoid tournament day hype or conversation about winning/losing. If you find your student is anxious about winning or losing, reframe it by asking them to come up with 1 goal they have control over. Examples can include:
Try to do the kata by themselves before asking for help
Getting through the kata alone
Doing a kiai (shout) during their kata
Trying a kick in kumite
Making a new friend
Remember, this is just a regular class but with a little twist!
