WKC Curriculum

Our curriculum focuses on 3 main elements:

  1. Time

    • Students require a specific amount of time at each rank to learn new skills and build on/improve prior skills.

  2. Skills

    • Each rank has a specific specific list of skills required. These skills fall into one of four categories: waza (traditional techniques), kata (patterns), kumite (sparring) and bunkai (self defense).

    • Each skill is expected to be performed at a specific ability level. For example, a new student will demonstrate a kick at a level 1 (beginner level) while a blue belt will be expected to demonstrate a kick at a level 3 (advanced level).

  3. Attitude

    • In our program, students learn elements of respect, kindness, discipline and integrity in an age-appropriate way. Over time, we expect these skills to develop and mature.

Skill Levels

Level 1: Beginner level - gross motor movements are demonstrated

Level 2: Intermediate level - addition of finer motor movements

Level 3: Advanced level (focus on advanced elements such as targeting, timing of foot/hand, sequencing, speed and power)

Level 4: Expert level - exemplary demonstration of all advanced elements with kime and zanchin (focus and intent).
